St Vincent - Marry Me

St Vincent

Today is the day that the new album Marry Me by uber-talented St Vincent comes out on Beggars Banquet.

We were lucky enough to see Annie Clark, aka St Vincent open for John Vanderslice at the Triple Door some months back, where she played a number of songs off her new album. I can say without a doubt that Marry Me is one of my favorite albums of the year so far. Initially when we saw her perform I was definitely intrigued, but slightly unsure how I felt about her. It was obvious she was extremely talented, opening solo and playing guitar, piano, etc. But I wasn't completely sold. I was interested though and made sure to keep her on my list of things to check out.

We've had a chance to hear her new album and let me say that it's beautiful. Her lyrics are witty, funny and strange and her melodies are well crafted, with an array of instruments. Other than a few guest appearances she does pretty much everything herself. I think my absolute favorite song on the album is "Paris Is Burning", which has a rather gypsy feel to it and the story is interesting too. I remember her doing this one live and it was amazing. Other songs I love are "Marry Me", "Your Lips Are Red", "Now, Now" and pretty much every song on the album.

According to allmusic.com she sounds something like Regina Spektor, My Brightest Diamond, Joan as Police Woman, and Feist. So if you like any of those I highly suggest you give her a try. Even if you don't like any of those singers/bands, give her a try anyway. She's amazing.
