A Deadliest Catch Kind of Day

Saturday found us without much to do, other than get groceries, and to be honest the thought of getting groceries and not doing much else didn't sound too appealing. So we decided to take a little drive down the waterfront and attempt to find a way into Myrtle Edwards park. We found the park indeed, but there wasn't anywhere nearby to park and before we knew it we were in Ballard.

So of course, being Deadliest Catch and Mike Rowe fans we started talking about the show, and the boats and whatnot and decided it would be fun to see if we could find any of them. That show is just amazing and I never really realized all that went into fishing Opilio (or any other type of) crab.

Now, if you know anything about Ballard you'll know that it has a fairly large fishing community and a number of piers where boats are docked. As well as it being home to the locks. All very nautical, and very likely that some of the boats from the show could be found there.

We decided however, before anything since we were in Ballard we'd hit up Archie McPhee to see what kind of wonderful treasures we could find. On our way there I looked down 24th towards the water and thought I saw the F/V Northwestern. So after buying some ninja stickers at Archie McPhee we decided to head down there to see. Lo and behold it was the Northwesten and it was getting sandblasted to hell. I guess they were going to repaint it or something. While we were standing there gawking at the huge crabbing vessel some workers walked past and said they were doing something, sounded like 'carboning' or 'carpeting' it, we just smiled and nodded and said "oOoOOo, that's cool". Then we just walked down to the end of the public pier, where it was very calm and quiet and just hung out for a bit.

To continue our Deadliest Catch afternoon, we decided to head over to the Lockspot where they filmed After The Catch with all the captains & Mike Rowe, for some very tasty and very decently priced fish & chips. Which was a good end to our geek filled Deadliest Catch afternoon.
